Thanks for Shoes...

During this years ORRRC Picnic, shoes were collected for the Xenia Residential Treatment Center.  Below is a letter received from Cynthia Lennon.

Dear Board,

This is a short note to express my gratitude for your help in providing shoes to the young men at Xenia's Residential Treatment Center.  I was overwhelmed by the response I received at the picnic. I believe over 40 pairs of shoes were donated and $18 in monetary donations was received. Some of the donated shoes were either brand new or close to being brand new. Other shoes had a story such as those which ran along the Great Wall in Beijing, China.  Each of the boys was able to find a pair of shoes to fit.  They were excited about the shoes and appear even more interested in running.

I am grateful to everyone who either donated or supported my efforts.  I would like to express particular appreciation to Stacy and John.  I am grateful for Stacy's idea to collect the shoes at the picnic, for her encouragement and collection of the shoes.  This is  in addition to the fact that she organized an absolutely marvelous picnic. Dave was also a big help.  I would like to thank John for his publicizing of the shoe drive on both the website and by sending e-mails to those who had registered for the picnic. Both Stacy and John's help occurred without a lot of advanced notice.

I cannot adequately express my appreciation but would like to thank the Board of the ORRRC as well as the organization. You will also be receiving a thank you from the young men.

Sincerely,
Cynthia A. Lennon

ORRRC History 1966-87

Scanned and OCRed from the original article published in the Winter 1987 Newsletter.

Ex-Presidents (Steve Price, Felix LeBlanc, Ray Olfky, Jack Wallace, George Snyder, Mitzi Henscheid, Wendell Owens) reflect on the early years. Hope you enjoy it!

ORRRC THE BEGINNING 1966-67
By Steve Price

As best as I can recollect, the ORRRC got underway during the winter of 1966-67. Western Kentucky University distance runner, Jack Mahurin was living and teaching in Washington C.H., Ohio and was competing for the Ohio Valley T.C. of Cincinnati.

I had recently married and was in my first year of teaching in Kettering. I had run at Miami University in Oxford and now represented the Dayton Athletic Club. In those days there were fun races in our immediate area and Jack and I felt the need for more events and an organization to sponsor such. We were both aware of the RRC at the national level and thus applied for membership. I believe, I even attended a couple of national RRC meetings (usually held the night of the Boston Marathon), and served on some of the national committees. Jack was our first president and I acted as Secretary-Treasurer for the fledgling club. Most of the races were held near my mother's home on the outskirts of Monroe, Ohio.

We used several of the road courses I had laid out while a student at Lemon-Monroe H.S. It was here that the first "Frostbite Five", "Monroe Marathon' and the "Watermelon Run" were held. The fields in those days were such, that many of the post race functions were held in the living room of my house.

Archives of Races-Going Live!

Over the next week, I will be preparing the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s ORRRC race archives.  I am getting through about 40 per day...

If you get a chance take a look.  It's been very cool looking at longtime members results, races that are no longer with us, and the incredibly deep fast times: One year Lou Cox had 6 runners under 15:30 in 1992!

Special thanks to Dan T and Jim B for their archives and info!

Orienteering Training

On Sat June 27th the MVOC / ORRRC Orienteering Adventure Race VI, will be held at George Rogers Clark Park.

I would like to get 3-4 folks that would like to learn to be a orienteer. We will sign up and go out as a team...   Once you learn this skill a whole new avenue of running events open up for you to enjoy.

Email me if you would like to join up!

Another Dam 50k Update and Thanks

Frank Fenton (RD) would like to thank all the volunteers that stepped up to help at this week's Another Dam 50k. He's gotten all the help requested to make it the best race yet!

It also looks like a new attendance record of over 110 hardy souls!  There will be no race day registration since the runner limit is 120. See you Saturday and good luck!

Graphic Designer Needed

Update:   Thanks for all the feedback...  for right now I think we have this covered!

We need some expert volunteer assistance with our logo.
If your a Photoshop / Illustrator guru and can spend an hour or so "vectoring" our logo that would be awesome.
