ORRRC Marathon & Half Marathon Starting Line Countdown

Safety

Did you know...

  • Running burns about 500 calories per hour
  • Running builds muscles and helps prevent disease
  • Running is great for clearing your head and building self confidence
  • Runners ARE different, but they make great friends and are easy to get to know
  • Running is cheap
  • Running is a blast!

So go run, but use your head because as much as we hate to think about it, running can be dangerous too.  Please read and follow the guidelines below.

And in case you are wondering, yes, this runner was wearing an iPod.  We can't stress this enough: Don't wear iPods when running outside!!!

Chula Vista Police Dept. Offers Personal Safety Tips

Following the recent killing of teenager Chelsea King, who was sexually assaulted and killed while running in a park near San Diego, I contacted the Chula Vista Police Department.  During a public meeting about two weeks after her death, they offered the attached safety tips for runners and walkers in parks.

The Eagles Have Landed

IWitness7 photos are showing lots of pictures of the Eagles at Englewood MetroPark.  People are getting some amazing views of eagles at Englewood on the trails and along River Road, where they can see the nest.  Try your next run here and see if you can spot these amazing animals.

Washington DC Runner Killed

See the story here: http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0310/713930.html

A lone runner on the road at 3 a.m., crossing an intersection against the traffic light, and wearing headphones.  In fact, her friends say that she always wore headphones and frequently ran at this time of night.  The news articles do not indicate whether she wore a flashing vest, but the semi truck did not even know he had hit her, so she was likely not wearing highly visible clothing.  Please runners, you must take care of yourselves - drivers will not see you.  You need to be vigilant in your ability to see and hear what is happening, when you share the road with vehicles.

Missing Runner in California

In the spring 2010 edition of the ORRRC newsletter, look for a full article on crimes against runners.  This links to a current article for a missing 17 year old San Diego runner who went missing during her trail run last week:

And a follow up article about an arrest:

Note that the assailant chooses women running alone to attack.  Stay safe out there!
