Reminiscent of the accident that killed Carol Wolff, a bicyclist recently collided with a runner wearing headphones on a crowded multi-use trail in Dallas. Â The runner apparently made a sharp left turn just as the cyclist attempted to pass. Â There was a separate pedestrian-only trail available, but the runner was on the shared run/bike path. Â The runner died from critical head injuries, and the cyclist was hospitalized too.

Many factors were cited – headphones, crowded trail, turning without looking, and trail etiquette.  You need to know the local trail etiquette wherever you run or ride.
Are runners or walkers to go on the left or the right on multi-use trails? Â Should faster runners or cyclists audibly announce their approach to slower traffic? Â Look back to this article from the ORRRC archives to review what is expected on trails in the Miami Valley.
