to know
-
Running is cheap
-
Running is a blast!
So... go run, but use your head because as much as we hate
to think about it, running can be dangerous too.
We seem to be hearing more and more accounts of runners getting into
accidents with cars or bikes. Worse yet are the stories about our fellow
runners being attacked. It doesn't just happen to women, and it doesn't
just happen in the 'bad' neighborhoods. It can happen to anyone anywhere.
But it doesn't have to happen to you. Take a look at the following guidelines
from the RRCA . FOLLOW THEM!! Be a smart
runner - not another sad statistic.
-
Don't run alone. Run with a friend or a dog. (Go to our Cooldown
page and click on 'training runs' to hook up with running groups.
-
DON'T WEAR HEADPHONES!! Use all of your senses (including your ears) to
be aware of your surroundings.
-
Carry change for a phone call. (Or, be a REAL yuppie and run with a cell
phone!)
-
Tell family and friends when and where you will be running.
-
Run in familiar areas, but alter your pattern. Know where you can find
telephones or open businesses along your running route.
-
Avoid deserted areas. Don't run close to bushes or parked cars. Avoid unlit
areas at night.
-
Carry identification or write your name, phone number, and blood type on
the inside sole of your running shoe. Don't wear jewelry.
-
Ignore verbal harassment. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. Look
directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving.
-
Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles.
-
Wear reflective material if you run before dawn or after dark.
-
Use your intuition about a person or an area. If it feels unsafe, leave!
-
Note license plate numbers and identifying characteristics of strangers.
-
Carry a noisemaker or pepper spray. (Be sure you know how to use these
items!).
-
CALL POLICE IMMEDIATELY if something happens to you or someone else, or
if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
